Spartan Works

Spartan Works

Program Overview

Spartan Works is a 7-week summer work-based learning program designed for high school students aged 16 to 26 who have an IEP and higher support needs, and live in the MRS Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, and Shiawasee Service Areas. This program emphasizes hands-on experiences and includes a dedicated soft skills class to help participants develop the foundational skills needed for success in the workforce. 

Through partnerships with Ingham area Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP), MSU Athletics, Residence Education and Housing Services, and Culinary Services, Spartan Works provides real-world exposure to a variety of career paths. Participants gain valuable work experience at actual jobs on the MSU campus, ranging from office skills and nutrition to sustainable farming and sports management.

            

Program Components

  • Career Exploration

    • Spartan Works offers a diverse range of fields, such as athletics, food services, building repairs, and program coordination (including orientation, campus events, and camps). This variety encourages students to explore areas that match their interests and future goals.

  • Collaborative Support Network

    • The program is enhanced by its partnerships, providing participants with a supportive environment that integrates academic institutions, rehabilitation services, and community resources for a more seamless learning experience.

  • Soft Skills Development

    • An essential component of Spartan Works is its dedicated soft skills class. In this class, students practice effective communication, teamwork, professional conduct, and problem-solving skills—abilities that are valuable in any workplace. Classes are conducted in the mornings during the first week and at the start of each day thereafter.

  • Work-Based Learning

    • Students participate in paid, meaningful jobs in various campus settings with support from a Spartan Works job coach. This hands-on experience in day-to-day operations allows students to explore potential careers while developing practical, transferable job skills aligned with their interests.
