Program Overview

Building Opportunities for Spartan Success (BOSS) is an innovative, one-semester work-based learning program designed to help MSU students with disabilities transition into meaningful employment.
 
BOSS combines weekly lessons on employability skills with paid job placements on campus. By understanding each student’s professional interests and goals, the program pairs participants with relevant work experiences that enhance essential skills, including self-advocacy, communication, and networking. Additionally, personalized job coaching and ongoing feedback provide support as students build confidence, develop real-world skills, and achieve greater independence.

                         

Program Components

  • Collaborative Partnership Model
    • By combining various campus and community resources—including MRS, the MSU RCPD, and additional units—BOSS enhances program coordination, creating a network of support that empowers students for long-term career success.
     

    Get Involved

    If you are interested in participating in Spartan Works, the first step is to connect with your Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) or Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP) counselor. They are there to support you and can help you understand if you are eligible for services. If you're already working with MRS, they can also help you see if this program is the right fit for your needs. 
     
    If you haven't contacted MRS or BSBP yet, please know that the eligibility process might take up to three months. Starting this process early can facilitate a smoother transition. We are here to assist you at every stage.

    • BOSS helps students acquire real work experience while earning wages, aligning their interests and career goals with on-campus positions that enable them to apply their newly learned skills while building on their resume in a supportive environment.

    • Ongoing guidance from experienced professionals helps students refine their workplace abilities. Constructive feedback fosters continuous growth, helping each individual identify and address areas for improvement.
     
  • Weekly Employability Lessons 
    • Regular classroom sessions teach essential career-readiness skills such as self-advocacy, effective communication, networking, and problem-solving. Students acquire practical strategies that enhance workplace confidence and independence.
